Melissa McCarthy: Saturday Night Live

Yesterday on VH1, I saw an edited 2011 episode of Saturday Night Live, starring Bridesmaids breakout star, Melissa McCarthy. I was so impressed by her (no glancing off to the side to read cue cards). She completely owned every featured skit and embraced her characters, including Arlene, an office worker and human-resources nightmare, who is not so subtle about her love (lust) for a co-worker. McCarthy was inspiring in her portrayals, tackling characters with extreme personalities. Her facial expressions, her timing and delivery, her control, and subsequent abandon, had me realizing yet again that McCarthy is a talented and fearless performer, not afraid of bathroom sinks as evident in Bridesmaids, and now… horse-shaped balloons and salad dressing.

The episode also featured a “Best Friends from Growing Up” walk-on during Weekend Update with Seth Meyers. The premise: two best friends of a notorious and infamous world leader (quietly) share their views and personal insight/gossip about how difficult the leader can be in “real-life” friendship scenarios. Vanessa Bayer steals the skit, as she sits alongside the always reliable, Fred Armisen. BSo
