Kylie Minogue: Over the Rainbow

Judy Garland’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow is a classic. No one will sing the song as great as she did. I do think, however, that Kylie Minogue’s cover of the classic during her Showgirl Greatest Hits Tour is one of the best. Rising up on a sparkly crescent moon, Kylie looks like a shooting star herself; the crisp white light bathes her as her gown drapes down below her. There is a quiet, calm control to her performance. With such a beautiful melody, she doesn’t venture too far from the original. Why mess with a perfect song and Kylie knows and respects that. Take note of Kylie’s strong vocals, especially at the end. She just belts and holds that last note. There’s no lip-syncing here (over ever) and the vein on the right side of her neck proves it. This year Kylie is celebrating 25 years in music, and after 10 tours, this goes down as one of my favorite live performances.
