Kylie dons the pink showgirl
costume. There are a number of compelling gestures featured in the opening
credits, which traces her walk from dressing room to stage. For example:
Exhaling calmly as she slips on her jacket; the proud smile during a lipstick
touchup; giving the “thumbs up” as she walks down the hallway; grabbing her
stomach as she reaches her arm out to seek support from tour manager, Sean
Fitzpatrick. The range of emotions is all there, with the final one being sheer
happiness as she pivots around on the platform to the roar of a cheering crowd.
Better the Devil You Know
is the opening number of Showgirl
Homecoming; the same as in the
original Showgirl set list.
Keeping a similar set list allow Kylie and technical crew to pick up where they
left off, indicating that although the first go’ round was “rudely interrupted
with my cancer diagnosis,” as Kylie once said, the show is back on. As the
stage surges from black to a bright pink at just the right point in the intro,
the lighting trusses ascend—there’s no denying that a Kylie show is always a
smartly executed one. The number also features signature Kylie-concert elements—feathers,
more feathers, and, well, short-shorts. Guess you gotta stay cool while you
move!
