Sophia Grace & Rosie on Ellen: One Year in Pink, Fluffy Dresses

It’s always such a blessing when you can take a short break from being an adult, with its time-consuming pre-occupations and occasional disappointments, and enjoy what comes “out of the mouths of babes,” as the old saying goes.

Yesterday, The Ellen Show celebrated the one-year anniversary of Sophia Grace & Rosie appearing on the comedienne’s talk show. Part brunette singing-and-rapping sensation; part blond dancer/hype girl, all pink and pint-sized, these two little English girls can’t help but make me—and millions—laugh.

A lot can be learned from watching and listening to the smart simplicity expressed by these two kids. The girls are a reminder of the power of gratitude and how even the most base things can—and should—bring about such zest. As adults, we think there has to be more to life than fluffy dresses, the color pink, pop music, and little toy lanterns, yet how great are fluffy dresses, the color pink, pop music, and little toy lanterns?! The actor and comedian, Russell Brand once asked the now-equally-famous Sophia Grace, “What’s happening in your mind right now, Sophia Grace?” Her response, as you’ll see in the first clip below, was so inspired.

They’re also a reminder of how important fearlessness can be. You may be nervous and anxiety-ridden sometimes, but when life deals you a sudden Nicki Minaj sighting, scream first, then just rap and sing on without stumbling. When that red light on the camera is glowing, just keep talking like you’re talking to your best friend at home on the couch. When they meet Rihanna, a self-deprecating story as told to Ellen by Sophia Grace, can be nothing short of hilarious. Even a chat over tea with Taylor Swift shows how the subject of boyfriends can bring about a similar reaction, whether you’re 6 or 22.

The dynamic between Sophia Grace and Rosie is quite interesting too. Although Sophia Grace does all the singing and rapping, Rosie is right there with the dance moves. It's an important, yin-and-yang relationship. At the end of their rendition of Alicia Keys’ Girl Is On Fire, as seen in the second clip below, Sophia Grace looks at Rosie and says, “We did it!” Not I, but we. How inspiring is that? Congrats—and thanks—to Sophia Grace & Rosie. I don’t know about you, but I’m truly grateful for laughter… oh, and cotton candy. BSo
