Kylie Dose: “If I Loved You”

This week’s Kylie Dose comes from a 2010 performance at an outdoor summer-concert series in New York. The leopard-print-clad Kylie appeared with the singer Rufus Wainwright for several songs. This one in particular, If I Loved You from Carousel, was a standout. (Their duet version of Hallelujah was also a winner.) The playfully coy banter between them is reminiscent of an old vaudeville act or an old black-and-white movie, filled with veiled (or not-so-veiled) tongue-in-cheek dialogue.

And to top it all off, Kylie’s vocals have a vintage quality to them; a style harkening back to the soft, sweet musical numbers often heard in animated-film classics. One almost expects cute rabbits, little bluebirds or tiny, friendly mice to surround her in awe.

At the end of this clip, you’ll briefly hear the transition into their next song, a cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee’s Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. BSo
