Dose of Minogue: “Do It Again” The Anti-Tour 2012

As Kylie introduces the next song to the Manchester crowd, she mistakenly says the phrase, “especially for you.” These three words reference the title to one of her hits from the ‘80s, and the crowd hoots and hollers thinking this will be the next song in the setlist. In fact, the next song, a “B-side to… something,” is Do It Again, which was featured as an addition to her 2007 single, Wow.

As Do It Again begins, the opening harmonies from her backing vocalists add an angelic, regal, almost aristocratic feel to the song, yet they quickly fade, revealing an up-tempo, fast-paced dance sound when Kylie enters into the first verse. A song about the sensory overload that occurs when someone takes yet another chance on love, Kylie describes:

“Can you all see this?
The flowers blooming
Or am I trapped in a haze and
Maybe it’s just me
I know I’m foolish
Here I go falling again
‘Cause I can’t help myself…”

Being that Do It Again is a rarity, it’s no wonder that Miss Minogue flubs up a lyric at 2:25 (SB: “I get a feeling/It’s like a shiver…”), but as with any professional, she just keeps going, never truly losing her place, thanks to the reliable sheet-music easel propped up off to the side.

The guitar scratch that comes in at 3:03 leads to the bridge and eventually to Kylie’s big note that she hits at the end of this section. And as with any well-constructed Pop song, you must get back to the chorus, and in some cases, finish out the song with a musical reference featured at the beginning. The backing vocalists round everything out with a return to the angelic, orchestral harmonies. Do It Again—simply an A+ B-side. BSo
