Have you ever heard a song
so much that you deep down inside knew that you were eventually—and
reluctantly—going to end up liking it? Long sentence short: the guilty pleasure
pop single. Taylor Swift’s We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is this type of single.
I’ve appreciated Swift in
the past for being pretty… and pretty talented enough, as a vocalist, musician
and writer of bubble-gum country/pop music. Now 22, Swift seems to be
transitioning nicely and safely through the music biz. As this clip from The
Ellen Show demonstrates (have you
noticed I love all things Ellen D.?), Swift is looking more and more like a
young polished pop singer and less like a boot-sporting, curly-haired country
girl (nothing wrong with that). The long hair with bangs; the red lipstick; the
tailored white collared dress shirt; the adorable, retro-inspired fitted black
shorts; the loafers sans socks, Swift looks grownup, yet still relatable to
(and appropriately dressed for) the huge crowd of young girls.
We Are Never Ever… is catchy, with attitude-laced lyrics such as: “We
hadn’t seen each other in a month when you said you needed space… what?” And
that chorus, complete with “We-ee!” The new album might be called Red, but this single is all platinum.
This outdoor performance is
also quite cute, as Swift interjects some choreography in unison with her
backup vocalists. When I see Swift strutting down the runway, then completely
surrounded at the end of it by fans, yeah, I kinda get it.
And have you seen the Target
commercial? I’ve seen it 4,277 times, and sure enough, I really like the
featured song, Red. “Losing him
was blue, like I’ve never known/Missing him was dark grey, all alone… But
loving him was red, yeah, yeah, red, a burning red.” (Am I just a monkey?) And
it’s not just yet another smart, on-point Target commercial, but another
display of Swift’s evolving style. If she has a stylist, he or she needs more
praise and a raise. BSo
